If you supply people and equipment to mine sites, you already know the portals. Pegasus. Avetta. Cm3. ISN. Maybe two or three of them at once, because each client picked a different one.
Here’s the thing most contractors work out the hard way: those portals were never built for you. They were built for your clients.
That’s not a criticism. It’s just who the customer is.
What client portals are actually for
A compliance portal exists to protect the principal. The mine operator needs to prove that every contractor walking onto their site is qualified, inducted, insured and safe. The portal collects your documents, verifies them against the operator’s rules, and gives the operator a clean answer: this company and these workers are cleared.
They do that job well. Pegasus has been doing it since the late 1980s, with roots in the Hunter Valley mining industry. These are mature, credible systems.
But look at the direction of the data. Everything flows from you to the operator. The portal answers the operator’s question: “is this contractor compliant on my site?”
It does not answer your questions.
The questions a portal can’t answer for you
Try asking your client’s portal:
- Which of my people and equipment have something expiring in the next 60 days, across all my clients?
- Can I send this technician and this drill rig to Site A next Tuesday?
- What’s blocking the four people I need for the shutdown next month?
- If Client B changes their requirements tomorrow, who in my team falls out of compliance?
A single portal only sees the slice of your business that touches that one client. If you work across three clients and two industries, no portal sees the whole picture. You do. Usually in a spreadsheet, held together by one very stressed admin.
The gap: you find out when the portal flags it
Without your own system, the portal becomes your early warning system. Which means the warning arrives at the worst possible time: when a worker gets knocked back at the gate, or a mobilisation stalls because a ticket expired last week and nobody saw it coming.
The portal did its job. It protected the operator. Nobody was protecting you.
